The basics
Your microbiome, in plain English
Trillions of bacteria live in your large intestine. Together they’re called your gut microbiome. They break down fibre you can’t digest yourself and make substances your body uses.
Everyone’s mix is different. It’s shaped by what you eat, the medicines you take, how you move and sleep, and your life so far. A microbiome test shows you what’s in yours today, compared with reference ranges.
What the report covers →Inside your report
Six things you’ll learn
Diversity
Your Shannon index: how many types of bacteria you carry and how evenly they’re spread.
Dysbiosis index
Whether your gut leans towards helpful or less helpful organisms overall.
Enterotype
Which of three groups leads your gut: Bacteroides, Prevotella or Ruminococcus.
F/B ratio
The balance between Firmicutes and Bacteroidota, the two largest groups of gut bacteria.
Key species
Four groups of named bacteria, each compared with a reference range.
Diet suggestions
Fibres and foods that may feed the bacteria you’re low in, with a realistic timescale for change.
Four groups to know
The bacteria your report names
Probiotic
Bacteria often found in probiotic foods and supplements, such as Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus, plus Akkermansia muciniphila.
Butyrate-producing
Bacteria that ferment fibre into butyrate, a short-chain fatty acid the cells lining your bowel use for energy. Examples include Faecalibacterium prausnitzii and Roseburia.
Mucin-associated
Bacteria that live in and feed on the mucus layer of the gut wall, such as Akkermansia muciniphila and Bacteroides fragilis.
Sulphate-reducing
Bacteria that produce hydrogen sulphide, such as Bilophila wadsworthia and Desulfovibrio. Small amounts are normal.
